What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet is itself the combination of the foods that compose it, as well as the exercise and the climate that are common in the countries bordering on the Mediterranean Sea, among them the most important countries for this diet are Spain, Italy, Greece and the countries in the North of Africa facing the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mediterranean diet is based mainly on a low consumption of meats and carbohydrates, and a considerably higher consumption of vegetables, fats and seeds.

There are vegetables and legumes, fruits, white meat, pasta, rice and seeds, one of the most used ingredients is olive oil, which due to Oleic acid that it has helps to keep cholesterol levels low, also contains high levels of Carotene and vitamin E. The Mediterranean Diet mainly promotes the consumption of Olive Oil compared to other types of oil such as butter or margarine, does not use red meats, does not have many sweets and uses little Egg.

In the Mediterranean Diet are the recipes for typical meals, it is a region with extraordinary richness in traditional regional recipes according to the numerous cultures that make up this region of southern Europe and North Africa.

The Mediterranean Diet provides enormous health benefits, helps to lose weight, and although sometimes it is not so low Calories helps regulate metabolism.

The consumption of fish provides high quality protein and also contains Omega-3 which is itself an anti-inflammatory and helps prevent heart disease.

An important source of fats are olives and nuts such as almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts.

It contains some cereals. It is also very rich in other leguminous seeds such as soybeans, beans, chickpeas, lentils, all of them helps to produce muscle and greatly facilitate the metabolism.

Just as it has enormous advantages, the Mediterranean Diet also has some Risks, if we take this diet is in a very strict way it can lower the levels of Calcium and Iron in the organism, because the consumption of meats is low, this can be substituted taking some food supplement of Iron, Calcium and containing a good supply of Mineral Salts.
